A mosque and a church that share one yard.
What to know
- In the centre, the Great Mosque (Mulla Veseli Mosque, 1891) and the Orthodox Church of St Uroš (1929–1933) share the same yard.
- The Great Mosque was restored in 1942–1943 and its minaret went up in 1957. In 2003 the area around the mosque was enlarged and a fountain added; a second minaret went up in 2006.
- Josif Mihajlović Jurukovski was the architect of the Church of St Uroš; its interior wall paintings date from 1930.
- In 2016–2017 an EU-funded UNDP project rehabilitated the shared mosque-and-church complex in the centre, including the bell tower.
- Under the same project, the former seat of the Catholic diocese was renovated and is now a museum.
- The Catholic Church of the Guardian Angel was built in 1926, paid for by local Albanian Catholic families themselves.
- The Berisha Mosque in the village of Greme dates from the 17th century and has never had a minaret.
- The mosque in the village of Talinoc i Muhaxherëve was built in 1908 by villagers who had settled there after Albanians were driven out of the Sanjak of Niš. The building is in fairly good condition but is no longer used for prayer.
- The official cultural heritage database lists five archaeological sites for Ferizaj; none of the mosques or churches mentioned here is among them.
- At Lower Nerodime, west of the town, test digs in 1988 uncovered a villa complex.
- At Nikadin, 2 km south of the town, archaeological traces were recorded in the 1960s.
- Varosh, about 2 km south-south-east, has a Neolithic settlement site.
