Renewing your residence permit (titre de séjour) in France
In France, many residence permits are renewed online on the Interior Ministry's ANEF portal. This page sums up the general rules. The exact documents depend on the type of permit and the prefecture.
This is general information from the official French pages below, not legal advice. For your own case, ask the prefecture where you live.
- When to apply
- Online on ANEF, no earlier than 4 months and no later than 2 months before your permit (or VLS-TS visa) expires.
- If you are late
- On top of the permit cost you pay €180 (droit de visa de régularisation), except in cases of force majeure or if you hold a valid visa.
- Renewal fee (from 1 May 2026)
- €250. A reduced €100 rate applies to some types, for example students, seasonal workers, family reunification, job search or business creation, au pair.
- First permit and duplicate (from 1 May 2026)
- €350, or €150 at the reduced rate.
- When you pay
- When the application is accepted and you collect the permit. An SMS tells you the permit is ready and how much to pay.
Steps
- Mark the dates
Work out the window 4 to 2 months before expiry. - Prepare the documents
Commonly asked for: passport, proof of address under 6 months, your digital photo code (e-photo) and your current permit. The full list depends on the permit type; see your prefecture's page. - Apply on ANEF
You immediately get a digital certificate that you have applied. - Follow your application
You see its status in your ANEF account. During processing you may get an extension certificate (ADP), which lets you stay lawfully in France. - Buy the tax stamp and collect the permit
After the SMS, buy the electronic stamp online (timbres.impots.gouv.fr) or at an equipped tobacconist. Do not buy a 'timbre amende' (fine stamp) by mistake. You collect the permit at the prefecture or sub-prefecture.
The 10-year resident card
- Valid for 10 years and renewable.
- It stops being valid if you leave France for more than 3 years in a row.
Not every permit is on ANEF
- Some permit types are still filed at the prefecture by appointment. Check your prefecture's page.
How long it takes
- There is no published national processing time; it varies by prefecture.
- Under the CESEDA code (Articles R432-1 and R432-2), if the prefecture does not reply, silence counts as a refusal: as a rule after 4 months, or sooner (90 or 60 days) for some permit types.
- During processing, the extension certificate (ADP) lets you stay lawfully.
The official document list
- Annex 10 of the CESEDA code (in force since 1 July 2024) gives the official list of documents for each type of permit.
- All documents must be in French or translated by a sworn translator attached to a court of appeal.
- Commonly required: the long-stay visa or current permit, passport, proof of address under 6 months, 3 photos 35×45 mm (or the online photo code), proof the tax was paid and, where required, the OFII medical certificate.
